Аннотация:Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a side effect ofphotosynthetic reactions in oxygenic phototrophs. It is increased underharsh conditions disturbing the balance of the photosynthetic reactions.Phototrophic organisms have evolved plenty of stress-induciblemechanisms to restrict this harmful process, among which energy-dependent non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) is one of the mostimportant. While in streptophytes, a component of photosystem II, PsbS, isa key player in the NPQ, the question of PsbS function in chlorophytes is acomplicated one. Recently, we have found the long-term stress-inducedexpression of PsbS accompanied by an induction of NPQ in thepsychrotolerant unicellular green alga Lobosphaera incisa. Here wedemonstrate that this expression pattern is characteristic of at least one moregreen algal species and is accompanied by an induction of NPQ anddecrease in ROS generation. This finding suggests the essential role of PsbSin cell survival under stress by acting as NPQ activator, similar to those ofits homologues in higher plants. Nevertheless, to prove this function of PsbSand to evaluate its efficiency, PsbS-deficient mutants should be furtherobtained
