Аннотация:
In this chapter, the essential theoretical tools for understanding the physics of dielectric nanophotonic devices are presented and reviewed in detail. After a brief introduction to Maxwell’s equations in the frequency domain and some essential aspects of scattering theory, we put forward a rigorous derivation of the multipole expansion of the polarization currents induced in a dielectric by an incident wave. The multipole expansion of the electromagnetic fields in terms of vector spherical harmonics is also discussed and the analytical Mie solutions are provided. Connections between the different kinds of multipolar representations are rigorously derived. The theory of Quasinormal Modes, resonant modes of open dielectric cavities, allowing a physically transparent interpretation of several important effects in particles of arbitrary shape, is also thoroughly reviewed. Two different phenomenological models reproducing the physics of dielectric devices are presented. The chapter ends with an introduction to scattering by periodic structures, necessary to grasp the concept of a dielectric metasurface. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
