Peculiarities of formation, isomorphism and geochemistry of trace elements of sphalerite and wurtzite unusual varieties from the Goniatite occurrence (Pai-Khoi Ridge, Nenets Autonomous District

Аннотация: A unique Mn-,Cd-bearing sphalerite from quartz-calcite veins in the thickness of coal-bearing (Visean C1v) marine sediments in a 50-km stretch of the middle course of the Silova-Yakha River in the Arctic zone of the European part of Russia has been studied. The veins occur in two types of rocks: grey limestones and black siliceous-clay shales, known as the Goniatitovoje occurrence (Pai-Khoi Ridge). The sulphide content in vein samples is from 0.1 to 2 vol.%. LA-ICP-MS and microprobe analysis (EPMA) were used to investigate the trace element content of sphalerite. The method of microthermometric study of gas-liquid inclusions in vein quartz was used to estimate the temperature and salinity of the mineral-forming fluid. The chemical composition of 27 monomineral samples of Pai-Khoi Mn-,Cd-bearing sphalerites was studied and analyses were carried out at 82 points. Correlations between typomorphic elements-impurities were revealed, correlation matrix was constructed. The following elements are positively correlated with each other: Cu, V, Ga, In, Sn, As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Tl, Se, Ag, Au, Ni; negatively to them - Cd, Mn and Ge. The hydrothermal fluid involved in crystallisation of sphalerite is characterised by low temperature (164-211°C) and average salinity of 5-6 wt.% eq. NaCl. An updated "portrait" of typomorphic features (composition and properties) of sphalerite of the Pai-Khoi province was obtained. The features allowing to determine the type of impurity in the sphalerite structure: isomorphic impurity or in the form of microinclusions of minerals of paragenetic association have been established. By the nature of time sweeps of LA-ICP-MS profile ablation and correlation relations between elements we can definitely state about the detection of submicron sulvanite and colusite inclusions in sphalerite, invisible by other methods. Typification of cathodoluminescence data of sphalerite from the Paikhoi province was carried out. Unlike other provinces, it is characterised by almost complete absence of isomorphic iron in ZnS. That allowed us to study pure ZnS↔MnS, ZnS↔CdS isomorphism schemes. Namely cathodoluminescence, and other types of luminescence. In addition, there is a rare wurtzite-4H polytype in association with sphalerite. High contents of strategic metals Cd, Ga, Ge, In in the ZnS matrix, as well as sulvanite (V, Cu) in a single paragenesis were found. It is likely that a serious reassessment of the potential for industrial use of this mineralisation will be required.
