Аннотация:The Bogdo-Baskunchak Nature Reserve is a special geoheritage site in the Caspian Depression, near the Lower Volga River and the boundary between Europe and Asia. The main geoheritage objects are, Salt Lake Baskunchak and the Mount Big Bogdo with gypsum field on its shores. Local people left many legends about this place. Long history of salt mining and trading, as well as geological exploration makes this geoheritage site special. This almost intact natural landscapes, as seen by the first Russian scientific expeditions of the 18th century organised by the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts in St. Petersburg. Reports and papers about this area are associated with P. Pallas, A. Humboldt, R. Murchison, E. Eichwald, I. Auerbach, P. Pravoslavlev, I. Efremov and other scientists and expeditions. Extensive researches and important discoveries were made in this area mostly in mineralogy, stratigraphy, paleontology, sedimentology, salt tectonics, and mining. This Geoheritage site reflects the long history of its exploration and could be a good example of organising protection of geological landmarks and monuments in arid regions.
