Аннотация: article is devoted to up-to-date developments in modern linguistic science, the analysis of new branches and trends. The authors emphasise the importance of language study on thebasis of the unity of all language areas. Also the authors briefly characterise recent changes in linguistics, paying particular attention to the grammatical system of the English language. The goal of the article is to show the expediency and even necessity of applying the functional approach and the cognitive-discursive paradigm to the study of different linguistic phenomena. As a result, the main method used in the study is of functional discourse analysis. The research material uses types of discourse such as Internet discourse, mobile communication discourse and print media discourse. The authors conclude that the use of functional approach in studies of the lexical and grammatical system of the language, and of the ognitive- discursive paradigm in the analysis of discourse helps to represent the language in a new dimension, to trace new possibilities of human speech activities and new features of the functioning of different levels of linguistic units.KEYWORDS: the English language, lexical and grammatical system, functional approach, cognitivediscursive paradigm, Internet discourse, mobile communication discourse, print media discourse.
