During his lifetime, Chekhov was nominated as a writer of world--wide significance, and at present time his works have been translated into more than 100 languages. Unfortunately, the quality of translations sometimes excellent suffers from inaccurate selection of equivalents, in particular, lexicon with an emotionally evaluative connotation, which is richly represented in all genres of the works by Chekhov. Using the Corpus of the works by A.P. Chekhov [Benko, Potemkin 2021] and the dictionary of evaluative vocabulary [Loukachevitch, Levchik 2016], in the texts of the corpus, lexemes with sentiment connotation were automatically selected and tagged with [pos], [neg] tags (for example, surprise, hatred, anger, sad, disgusted, angry, scared, joyful, indifferent, etc.). Within the framework of computer practice, students of the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University were asked to find equivalents of these words in different translations of A.P. Chekhov‟s stories e. g. English, German, French, Spanish, Italian) and to mark the sentiment words with tags [pos], [neg]. In the course of completing the assignment, students were asked to use both academic Russian--language and foreign--language explanatory and specialized dictionaries. At the preliminary stage of the work, the files of the original texts and translations were semi--automatically aligned at the level of sentences [Potemkin, Kedrova 2010]. As a result of the work done, each evaluative word / phrase in the translated texts was provided with similar tags. It was found out that many of the analyzed words of the translation do not adequately reflect the assessment of the original text. In some cases, the sentiment orientation in the translation is exactly the opposite of that235presented in the original. The study of methods of transferring expressive expressions such as well them (nu ikh)!, as well as the emotional coloring of Russian entities that are absent in other languages (for example, samovar frenzy (samovarny ugar), holy fool (yurodivy), etc.) are of particular interest is. In the result of the work a list of lexemes and lexical structures that cause the greatest difficulty for translators in the transfer of sentiment assessment was compiled, and it can be widely used in teaching. The conclusion can be considered as a recommendation for future translators to pay more attention to the correspondence of the evaluative vocabulary in the original text and the translation. The method developed can also be applied to translations from a foreign language into Russian.
