Аннотация:The paper describes the former and nowadays status of Kashmiri, the main language of the population of Jammu-and-Kashmir State in India. It is demonstrated that in spite of the developed literary tradition (started in the 14-th century) the Kashmiri language of today may actually be treated as a Minor Language while the the role of the dominant means of communication is played by Urdu. The reasons for this are analized in the paper.
