Abstract: One of the ways of describing the complexity of the channel network organization is considered on the example of small river basins of the Central Black Earth region. It is proposed to consider the relative indicator of complexity, which assesses not only the complexity of the subordination of channels of different orders, but the ratio of the complexity of the structure in comparison with the pool that does not have irregularly formed channels. Such a pool is called "minimal" and has a simple structure complexity. Further, for all real basins, indicators of relative complexity were calculated, revealing a complication of the structure both from below and the indicators of complication of the upper parts. It is established that the modern functioning of river basins, which have a relatively simple structure, is manifested in the active development of the upper reaches. In complex river basins, more active functioning occurs in the lower reaches and middle parts of the basins, while the upper reaches are in a relict state. Simple in structure river basins dynamically develop in accordance with modern landscape and climatic conditions. Knowledge of the direction and features of the development of river basins and their individual parts, the regularities of interaction of differently ordered links in the hydroset, and the manifestation of geomorphological processes in them should be taken into account when planning the development of engineering and economic development.
