Resonant microstructures are widely explored due to their ability for selective enhancement of electromagnetic fields, a wide bunch of effects that originate from the interference of different types of resonances, as well as their interaction with fields of rather different spectral ranges. An exciting example here is the combination of Light and sound, which is the basis of important tools for many interdisciplinary applications, but usually they are very difficult to be detected simultaneously in the same transducer of a micrometer size. However, these waves can interact when using resonant microstructures making a unique transducer. We want to experimentally demonstrate a compact innovative optomechanical system for probing induced modulation from light and sound sources through polymeric whispering gallery mode and Mie resonators. This final goal requires the studies of (i) new approaches for the fabrication of microstructures with desired resonant properties based on two-photon polymerization of doped polymers (Russian team), (ii) characterization and optimization of their resonant and photoluminescence properties (Italian and Russian teams), and (iii) studies of the effects induced by from light and sound sources through polymeric active whispering gallery mode and Mie resonators (mostly Italian team in collaborations with Russian team). Two-photon lithography based on the usage of ultra-short laser pulses will provide high quality and reproducibility of active dielectric structures with sub-micron resolution. As the result, in this proposed project we will achieve a robust instrumentation that features stable and optical coupling to the optically switchable microresonators and integration with customizable data processing capabilities. Ultrafast all-optical switching will exploit high nonlinearity of the polymer nanocomposite used for the fabrication of dielectric resonant microstructures. Building on recent advances of the applicants’ teams in optomechanical and ultrasound processes in resonant photonic devices, the suggested photonic devices will be used for enhancing nonlinearities and explore the corresponding sound nonlinear processes [D. Farnesi et al, Scientific Reports (2017) DOI: 10.1038/srep44198; X. Rosello-Mecho et al, Scientific Reports DOI: doi: 10.1038/s41598-019-43271-x.; G. Frigenti et al, Physical Review Applied, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.12.014062; G. Frigenti et al, Sensors, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/s20061696 ]. All-optical switches based on nonlinear Kerr effect will be also implemented in hybrid polymeric resonators doped with nonlinear nanoparticles. The execution of the project will require a strongly multidisciplinary approach involving advanced micro-optical fabrication, material sciences and numerical simulations. Indeed, the development of a compact and robust unit will be a key point to guarantee the reliability of our non-linear optomechanical devices. For that reason, the collaboration of a partner with strong expertise in non-linear optics is required. The long and fruitful collaboration existing between the Institute of Applied Physics (Firenze, Italy) and the MSU guarantees the success of this proposed grant.
