The novel photovoltaic element has a photosensitive semiconductor chip (1) having a barrier structure, electrically conductive current collector contacts (2) arranged on either side of the semiconductor chip (1), protective coatings (3) arranged on either side of the semiconductor chip (1) and current collector electrodes (9). At least the electrically conductive current collector contacts (2) arranged on the front of the semiconductor chip (1) are in the form of electrically connected mutually consecutive sections which are in contact or not in contact, respectively, with the surface of the semiconductor chip (1).
