Digital storytelling is a communicative modern strategy which can be effectively used when working with students of any level – from elementary to advanced. Not only does it develop language productive skills, but it also helps to improve digital literacy. In my talk I analyze benefits and challenges of digital storytelling in the classroom and describe my own experience of using this strategy with my first-year journalism students. As it is important for me to show my students the best examples of international digital journalism, I start with introducing them to the New York Times project '1 in 8 Million', which is a multimedia collection of stories told with audio and photography that portray everyday New Yorkers. The project helps to expose my students to different styles of spoken English that can be heard on the streets of New York. It also provides a model for their own digital projects 'Introducing Yourself in Sound and Image'.
