The study of the history of chemistry is necessary for many reasons, the main ones being: reconstructing the logic of discoveries, that is, understanding how scientific theories developed from guesses in the time of the ancient Greeks to modern discoveries, as well as examining the genesis of concepts, the evolution of terms and categories. Despite the fact that considerable attention has been paid to the stages of development of atomic-molecular theory, its focus has shifted to exotic ideas and models that were subsequently rejected by science. The system of atomic philosophy, originally proposed by philosopher Epicurus and subsequently supplemented by the abbot, mathematician, astronomer and chemist Pierre Gassendi in the XVII century, already contains many of the ideas adopted at the International Chemical Congress in Karlsruhe in 1860.
