The perception of the Sun and Moon in Russian and English cultures blends physical observation with deep-rooted cultural and linguistic frameworks. While sharing the same celestial objects and having the same scientific knowledge about the Sun and the Moon, the two cultures often interpret them differently (though not always), particularly in their grammatical gender, poetic imagery and cultural symbolism. The talk presents comparative analysis of the concepts mentioned above. It investigates how these universal celestial bodies are multimodally conceptualized through language representation, mythology and literature, taking into consideration common Indo-European roots of the two cultures. The talk shows an example of philological approach to linguocultural analysis.
