The digital age has shattered the primacy of the written word, giving rise to complex, hybrid comprehension of the meaning and image. This talk explores the new semiotic environment where language is inherently and adherently multimodal. We will analyze how words can be visualized, how static images perform themselves in readers brains and through the readers eyes, and how traditional texts might be transformed through interactive painting. We shall try to move beyond the traditional reading and understanding of a text, examining the deeper integration: how different modes, verbal and visual, compete, complement, and constrain each other to create new rhetorical effects and narrative forms while the words are painted. Thus, considering the implications for cross-cultural communication in multi-sensory landscapes of a language.
