Variational quantum algorithms represent a promising approach for achieving practical quantum advantage in the near future. In this work, we investigate this potential in the context of cryptanalysis - specifically, the task of key recovery from known plaintext-ciphertext pair. Our results demonstrate that the variational quantum attack algorithm (VQAA) exhibits counterintuitive behavior and shows a measurable advantage when compared to the best classical approach: brute-force search.
