The motives of seeing and witnessing are central in the first texts of atomic bomb literature. But what may seem documentary on first sight proves to be nothing more than an accumulation of splinters of reality, as these impressions are written down often in a shock-like state of the aftermath. The difficulty in communicating is not only due to the audience’s lack of experience of that kind of suffering and dying, but also to the witness-writer’s inability to bring coherence to what he or she has experienced. So we see that the testimony itself still is not reliable enough in the eyes of hibakusha and they always struggle with the language and the facts in order to provide an image of the tragedy but inevitably getting lost in the unspeakable things of the atrocity they have experienced.
