In this talk I discuss intralingual variation. I address the difficulties that state-of-the-art theories of language encounter when trying to capture variation. I show that quantitative methods lead to fundamentally new generalizations about variable phenomena. I present three novel results from Russian that provide new insight on how variation can be parametrized.
