This report examines climate change impacts in the Lake Baikal region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 571,000 km² in Russia and Mongolia. The climate is characterized as severe subarctic and continental (Dfc and Dwc), and the area is prone to extreme weather events, including heatwaves, floods, and wildfires. The warming rate is approximately 0.3-0.4 °C per decade, with projections of a 2.2-3 °C increase by mid-century. Precipitation patterns are becoming increasingly variable, affecting water supply and agriculture. The economic damages from these weather events could be significant, comparable to those in major Russian cities. The report highlights the urgent need for a transboundary adaptation plan to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance regional resilience.
