Solar cells devices are used to convert the sun energy into electricity. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) are a separate class, of particular interest due to their low production cost, long service life, ability to operate in low or artificial light, translucency, and mechanical strength [1]. The combination of these properties and the ability to provide the formation of a variety of color solutions allow DSSC to be applicable as autonomous or additional power in architecturally integrated photovoltaic systems [2] and portable electronics [3]. In research, the properties of new organic dyes based on thieno[3,2-b]indole were developed, synthesized, and studied, including a series of metal-free D-p-A dyes with a thieno[3,2-b]indole core, electron-donating part and 2-cyanoacrylic acid and 5-(methylene)barbituric acid in the form of an acceptor-anchor part. The dyes were studied in fully assembled operating DSSCs, and IS 1-5 compounds showed power conversion efficiency values in the range of 2.25–3.02%. Based on the results obtained, a new series of dyes was synthesized, thanks to which a efficiency of 4.41% was achieved. Methods for modifying the functional layers of DSSC including addition of Si nanoparticles to improve efficiency and optimize design features are considered. [1] M. Yahya, A. Bouziani, C. Ocak, Z.
