The ratio of the Hα/Hβline profiles was analyzed as a diagnostic indicator of non-thermal particle effects in solar flares. Differences between the Hα/Hβprofile ratio in the line center and at the distance of 0.5 Angstroms from the line center were studied in various phases of flares as concerns presence of responses to non-thermal effects. Variations of this parameter were compared with the HXR flux evolution for the 26 June 1999 and the 18 August 2002 solar flares. The sign of the parameter changed from negative to positive value only for these flare kernels where coincidence with the HXR sources indicated presence of accelerated particles. However, no such a change was found for the other kernels. The revealed effect was compared with information obtained from correlation between the temporal fluctuations of the Hα and Hβline and the HXR flux. The obtained results are discussed from point of view of their possible diagnostical applications.
