Recently, it has been shown in [1, 2] that surface plasmons travelling along a chain of metal nanospheroids have both nanosized transverse localization length comparable to the interparticle distance and macroscopic propagation length up to 15 µm. However, these results has been obtained in [1, 2] by the point dipole approximation. The applicability of this approximation seems questionable if the interparticle distance is comparable to the nanoparticle size. We study the propagation of surface plasmons along a chain of metal nanospheroids taking into account their finite size. We have shown that the finite size of spheroids leads to a significant change in the transmission characteristics of the nanoparticle chain, in particular, the propagation length of the surface plasmon drastically decreases.
