Most scholars believe that the rabbis failed to explain the destruction of the Second Temple. A vague and trivial moral trope substituted for the prophetic idea of the great national crime of Israel. Christians, on the other hand, developed this prophetic idea. We would argue, however, that the New Testament and the Talmudic literature nearly agree in their moral comprehension of the Doom. Shaming and hating a single person became a national guilt equal to idolatry. On the same ground, however, the sages accused God of shaming Israel.
