In the present paper the connection of pausing and slowing down the speech tempo with the information structure of an Irish sentence will be investigated, the special attention being given to the way the listener perceives tempo variation and reacts on this change. Furthermore, a number of examples will be adduced to illustrate the specific use of pauses, especially the filled ones, in spontaneous speech in Modern Irish.
