On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committees of the International Conference on Attosecond Physics ATTO2013, we are very pleased to welcome you in Paris, France. This is the 4th edition of a now well-established conference series that started in Dresden, Germany, in 2007, and continued in Manhattan, Kansas, in 2009 and Sapporo, Japan, in 2011. It covers all aspects of Attosecond Physics from sources and metrology to applications. This year, we were honored to receive a record number of 273 submissions. Selecting only 44 oral talks in such a large number of contributions was extremely difficult, all the more so as the general quality of the abstracts was high. The International Scientific Committee has been a tremendous help for us in this highly competitive selection. In building the program, we have strived to reflect the diversity of the 273 submissions and to ensure a balance between the different topics/laboratories/countries. 5 particularly interesting abstracts were upgraded to invited talks (in addition to the 12 invited talks selected in a first round and announced on the web). We also decided to increase from two to three the number of poster sessions in order to leave enough time for visiting the 229 posters that will be presented at the conference. The ATTO2013 attendance will also be exceptional, as over 300 participants from 31 countries are already registered, a 50% increase with respect to previous editions of the conference. These high numbers of submissions and registrations reflect the rapid growth of our research field, where new frontiers are being pushed outwards thanks to the rapid advances in ultrafast laser and XUV sources, metrology and detection schemes. The spacious and modern Conference Center of Institut Pasteur is ideally suited for accommodating this large audience. To maintain the spirit of optimizing opportunities for exchange of ideas, we have organized buffet lunches in the Conference Halls every day, as well as Wine&Cheese parties during the poster sessions. We hope that you will enjoy these social events and also use these opportunities to have numerous interactions with the industrial exhibitors and sponsors, who generously supported the conference. Selecting this location was only possible thanks to the generous support of numerous academic sponsors that are deeply acknowledged. The organization also benefited a lot from all our colleagues of the Organizing Committee who were really a first-class help and are also warmly acknowledged. Pre-events are accessible on Monday 8th, as ATTO2013 is coupled with a meeting of the ATTOFEL European Network, and with a special Symposium dedicated to the many scientific achievements of two pioneers of our field, Pierre Agostini and Alfred Maquet. Both events are freely open to the conference attendees. We sincerely hope that ATTO2013 will help stimulating international research cooperation and exchanges and will constitute a memorable event for the attosecond community in the privileged environment of the “City of Light”. We wish you all a very fruitful conference!
