The mitochondrial genome encodes for key subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation system and RNA components needed for mitochondrial translation. Nuclear genes encode the enzyme systems responsible for mitochondrial DNA replication, DNA repair, transcription and translation. Dysfunction of these machineries underlies a great variety of human diseases and modulates organismal aging. Recent years have seen a rapid development in our understanding of these machineries, but many important aspects still remain unknown. At this EMBO Workshop we wish to highlight the rapid advances that are presently being made in research into the basal molecular mechanisms underlying gene expression by the mitochondrial genetic system such as: DNA replication; DNA recombination and repair; Transcription and mRNA stability; Mitochondrial ribosomes, protein synthesis and assembly. The EMBO Workshop will assemble a selected group of leading scientists studying different aspects of mitochondrial molecular biology employing various types of organisms such as mouse, yeast and drosophila. Gathering these experts will allow to discuss and evaluate the molecular mechanisms of these processes in a broad and interdisciplinary perspective and define the future challenges in this urgent and fascinating research field.
